The short answer

What is NEUBIE training and how does it help?

NEUBIE is a neuromuscular re-education device that uses direct current (DC) electrical stimulation while you move. It helps your nervous system switch muscles back on after pain, injury or surgery.

At our North Austin clinic, NEUBIE is never a stand-alone machine. A Doctor of Physical Therapy pairs it with manual therapy, dry needling and strength training so the gains carry over to real movement.

Who it helps

What NEUBIE training can help with

The 6 most common reasons clients use NEUBIE training at our North Austin clinic.

01

After ACL or knee surgery

Common signs: a thigh that stays weak or won’t fully tighten, even when you work hard.

How it helps: stimulation helps the quadriceps fire while you rebuild strength.

02

After joint replacement

Common signs: slow strength gains and stiffness after a knee or hip replacement.

How it helps: adds a stronger muscle signal to your rehab exercises.

03

Muscles that “switch off”

Common signs: a glute, shoulder or core muscle that won’t engage, so other muscles overwork.

How it helps: retrains the brain-to-muscle connection so the right muscles do the job.

04

Pain that limits training

Common signs: pain that keeps you from training as hard as you want.

How it helps: lets you work muscles with less load while pain settles.

05

Strength and power plateaus

Common signs: progress has stalled in the gym or in your sport.

How it helps: adds a neuromuscular challenge to your strength and power work.

06

Return to sport

Common signs: you’re cleared, but don’t feel fast, strong or confident yet.

How it helps: sharpens muscle activation as you build back to full speed.

What the research says

Electrical stimulation: three things most people get wrong

01

Muscles can “switch off” after injury.

After knee injuries, the thigh muscle often can’t fully activate, even with maximum effort, and it often affects both legs.

02

Stimulation can rebuild strength.

After ACL surgery, adding electrical stimulation to standard rehab improved thigh strength and function more than rehab alone in the first 4 to 12 weeks.

03

It helps after knee replacement.

Electrical stimulation started 48 hours after knee replacement improved thigh strength and function, and the gains were still there at one year.
